Hamians emerged victorious against a strong Long Eaton 2nds on Saturday after Bingham were unable to raise a team for the Bank Holiday cup match.
With Ben May and Pat Revell making their debuts, and Alex Whittle and Jimmy Goodwin returning after a couple of seasons away the Hamains started with a very strong lineup
Long Eaton were first to score, with a significant territorial advantage in the opeing 10 minutes, the pressure With Long Eaton dominating at the ruck, it looked like being a tough day at the office. However, after weathering the early storm and staying in the match, a break by Big T up the middle saw him storm under the posts from 40m, with Revell adding the conversion for a 7-5 halftime lead.
At half time, the team mde use of their large bench to keep things fresh and the impact of forwards Jono Marshall and Cortney Owen kept Hamians on top, and they extended their lead when good footwork from Pat saw him evade several tacklers to score under the posts, making his own conversion a formality for 14-5. Shortly afterwards, and with Hamians applying pressure to the Long Eaton line, Matt Rooth collected the ball, and powered his way over. Revell missed the conversion, but the lead was stretched to 19-5. Shortly after and with the Hamians in a purple patch Jimmy Goodwin received the ball in his own half, and showed good footwork to break downfield. Despite his appearances Jimmy was able to outpace the covering defence for a spectacular try which completed the scoring for Hamians with 10 left to play. Long Eaton scored with virtually the last play of the game, but Hamians played out the remainder of the game to start the season off with a encouraging win.
There were many positives to take from the game, and plenty of things to be worked on in training over the next fortnight. Several performances stood out. Debutants May and Revell looked good additions to the sqaud, but club stalwart Matt Nixon stole the Man of the Match award for classy work out wide with the ball and steely defence.
